What happened to Lucky was a class tragedy. A bright, sparky, curious, kid, he introduced me to the Doc Savage books. But adolescence and working-class expectations coarsened him, plunged him into silence, vocational-school anti-intellectualism, auto repair, aggression, and hormonal sullenness.
