Keep On A-Poppin'

Let it not be forgotten, even with all the other madness going on around me this week, that there’s a new edition of How Bad Can It Be? up at Popdose. A bit of a rambler this time around; it’s ostensibly a record review, but it takes some side trips into ruminations on iconic status, the interpretability of songs, the elusive quality of swing, and the art of the remix—all as it relates to Johnny Cash, LCD Soundsystem, and Django Reinhardt. For all the digressions, I never found a chance to mention in the column itself that as much as I love “Get Rhythm,” it’s the exact same song as “Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy,” which was a #1 hit for Red Foley six years earlier. I’m just sayin’.
